About Cooperatives
Horizon is an Energy Cooperative founded on the principles of the 1995 ‘Statement on the Cooperative Identity’.
The Statement defines a co-operative as:
"An autonomous association of persons united
voluntarily to meet their common economic,
social, and cultural needs and aspirations through
a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled
enterprise"
The legal structure of a Cooperative as a not-for-profit organisation without share capital, allows the Horizon Energy Coop to generate revenue that is reinvested to promote and pursue the activities and stated goals of alleviating fuel poverty and delivering a low carbon future.
It is envisaged that similar energy cooperatives such as HEC will assist in the delivery of distributed energy generation required to reduce greenhouse gases to the levels required by the Kyoto Protocol.
